Matthew Randall Scott Scharf, 46, of Sellersburg, Indiana, passed away on August 8. 2026, leaving behind a family who loved him deeply and a lifetime of memories that will continue to bring both comfort and tears in the years ahead.
Matthew was born on October 13, 1979, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Randall and Ginnie Lou Scharf. He graduated from Graceland Christian High School and went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Coast Guard. He also earned his degree from the University of Louisiana—an achievement that reflected his determination, discipline, and quiet perseverance throughout his life.
Those who knew Matthew will remember his warmth, his easygoing nature, and his gift for making people feel seen and welcome. He truly never met a stranger. Whether through a conversation, a shared laugh, or a simple act of kindness, Matthew had a way of connecting with others that left a lasting impression long after the moment had passed.
Above all else, Matthew’s greatest pride and deepest love was being a father.
His children, Eva, Audrey, and Liam, were the center of his world. He loved them with his whole heart and devoted himself to raising them, guiding them, and making sure they always knew how deeply they were cherished. The bond he shared with them was one of the most meaningful parts of his life, and the love he gave them will continue to live on in who they are.
Matthew also carried a deep love for his family. He held a special place in his heart for his mother, Ginnie Lou Scharf, whose passing left a void he never stopped feeling. There is comfort in imagining them reunited once again.
He is survived by his beloved children, Eva, Audrey, and Liam; his father, Randall; his sister, Duranda (Brandon) Beatty, and their children Sofia, Abby, and Daphne; his brother, Jason (Sara), and their children Kory, Elijah, and Enoch, all of whom brought him great joy. He is also survived by many extended family members, friends, and loved ones whose lives were touched by his presence.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ginnie Lou Scharf, and his grandparents.
Matthew’s life cannot be measured only in years, but in the love he gave so freely, the relationships he built, and the memories he leaves behind. He will be remembered as a devoted father, a loving son and brother, a proud Coast Guard veteran, and a man whose kindness made others feel at ease.
Most of all, he will be remembered for his heart.
